Writing Grants on Contingency

In the not-too-distant future you will begin to see The School Funding Center offer to write grants for schools on a fee + contingency basis.  We will charge a flat, upfront fee of $500, and then charge a percentage of the grant only if it is funded.

For example, if a school wanted to write a grant for $10,000, The School Funding Center would collect $500 up front, and then charge 8% of the $10,000 ONLY if the grant is funded.
The school would pay a total of $1,300, but would receive $10,000.

Many grant writers and grant-writing organizations believe this is unethical.  I beg to disagree.  Schools are strapped for cash.  They need money but often can't afford to fork over $3,000, $5,000, even $10,000 to have a grant written by a professional grant writer with no guarantee that they will receive a single dollar in return.

Of course, the contingency percentage of the grant cannot come from the grant money.  That's a fact. The school will have to sign an agreement that the contingency money will come from sources other than the grant.  That's not a point of debate before or after the grant is written.  That's why The School Funding Center will make it a part of a written agreement.

Another argument against contingency is that a grant writer has limited control over whether a grant will be funded even after he/she has worked extremely hard to complete the application.  Ah, but that has nothing to do with ethics, does it?

If we don't believe a school has at least a 50/50 chance of having the grant funded, we won't write it.  Why spend the time or the school's $500?

Finally, there is a fear that when a grant writer writes on contingency, he/she will pad the budget as much as possible so the total fee will be as high as possible.  When The School Funding Center writes a grant on contingency, the school will determine the budget and the total amount requested in the grant---not the grant writer.  A good grant writer works with a school to write a grant, not for the school.

Soon you will see The School Funding Center offering to write grants on fee + contingency.  Rest assured we will treat all schools in a legal, ethical, and friendly manner.

We know schools, especially smaller schools, don't have the money to hire full-time grant writers.  The School Funding Center wants to help, and we hope we have found a solution that is good and fair to everyone.

Visiting the Website, Placing the Call

One of the unique features of The School Funding Center Grant Database is that it gives you a live link to most grantor websites, gives you the main person in charge of the grants, and gives you a phone number (and an email
address) for that main person.

I never begin applying for a grant without visiting the grantor's website.  I get every detail I can from it, and I'm often able to even download the forms I need to apply for the grant.  The website helps me see how well my needs match up with the grantor's giving policies.

This is a key to successfully writing grants.  Know the grantor well.  Make sure your needs match the grantor's giving.  Their website will help you do that.

After you have familiarized yourself with the website and the grantor policies, pick up the phone and call the person designated as the contact for the grant. We list email addresses for these important people, but I suggest you call them.  It is much more personal, and you are much more likely to get your questions answered to your satisfaction.  Get as much information as possible.

This phone call will give you lots of valuable information, but it will also get your name and your school's name in front of the contact person.  If this is a foundation, it is likely this person will sit on the committee to decide which schools receive grant money.  It never hurts for that person to be familiar with your name and your needs.

I never begin applying for a grant without a visit to the grantor's website and a phone call to their contact person.
I believe it increases the chances of actually having the grant funded by at least 25-50%.  That's a lot.  I highly recommend that you follow this procedure, too.
