I am rather amazed at the inactivity right now in regard to grants.  I judge this by the number of visitors we get at our website and the number of those who answer our various ads on the Internet.

I realize it's the spring break, winding down time of year (only 9 or 10 weeks left in some schools), but this should create a flurry of grant writing rather than subdue it.
It's really time to be writing for the fall semester, and there's actually time left to get some summer school money.

Why the inactivity?  I think educators get tired this time of year.  Testing time is coming up for many schools.
Unfortunately, everyone's focus usually turns to that testing.  Hey, we do what we have to do.

Regardless of this tendency, I encourage you to sharpen your pencils, get out your data, and apply for a few grants while you still have time this semester.

And, of course, if you want to locate all those grants quickly and easily, why not subscribe to our database.
All of that time that used to be devoted to FINDING the right grants can now be used to actually apply for more grants.

Hope to hear from you soon.

The Case for Writing Multiple Grants

The last two months, we've talked about needs assessments and then finding the solution to the most pressing problem at your school.  Once you've identified that solution in the form of a program, product, etc., it's time to start writing grants to help fund the corrective project.

It's not just time to write a grant.  It's time to write several grants.  You need the money.  You have to make every effort to make sure you get the grant money you need.

First of all, you should never put the future of any needed program in the hands of a single grant.  The old saying is, "Don't put all your eggs in once basket."  As big a cliche' as that happens to be, it's still true.
You may have any number of indications that you'll get a certain grant, but you can never be sure.  Rule #1:  Write multiple grants.  You are never guaranteed of getting any one grant.

Secondly, on larger projects you may not get all of the money you need in just one grant.  Let's say you do get the main grant for which you apply.  Does it cover all the costs of the program that you need covered?  One grant may cover materials, but you need another to cover personnel.  It may take three or four different smaller grants to fund a larger project.  Be sure you know what each grant covers.
Write enough grants to cover every base.

Finally, write multiple grants because it's an easy thing to do.  Once you have all the data collected, the main passages written, the budgets worked out, why would you only write a single grant?  The major work is done.  While you don't want to send out multiple copies of the same application, you do want to use the same information multiple times.  It's really a smart, efficient thing to do.

Write multiple grants?  Absolutely!  You never know which grants you'll get, you may need multiple grants to fund your program, and most of the work is already done.  Why not reuse it?

Tips
===========================================================

1. Write grants now while other people tend not to apply
   because they are focused on testing and the end of school.
2. Write multiple grants for the same program to insure that
   you get the grant money you need.
3. Find the grants that match up most closely to the needs
   you are trying to address using The School Funding Center
   Grant Database.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. Why can't I prepare one good application and send it to
   several different grant-making organizations?

A: Bad idea---for several reasons.  One, most organizations
   have their own applications with unique requirements.
   Two, if you did, and got money from both places, the
   money would need to be spent for the very same things as
   described in your budget.
