I'd like to thank all of you for subscribing to
the SCHOOL
FUNDING NEWSLETTER. We now have well over 20,000
subscribers. Such a large circulation tells me two things:
1)you like the free information we provide in our monthly
newsletter, and 2)schools need grant money more than ever.
What appeared to be a upward turn in the economy
has
stalled due to international concerns and the tremendous
increase in the price of oil.
The bottom line for schools is
that there will be little
more money in the fall budget than there was a year ago.
In many cases there will be less. The need for grant
money is increasing.
Do what you can to make sure the school
board, the
superintendent, and the principals put money where
it will do the most good for the most students. It is
amazing how much influence a respected educator can
have sometimes.
Also, through your educator organizations, stay
on
those state legislators to do the right thing by our
children, our students. There is no money to waste.
Do all you can. You can make a difference.

Can I Apply During the Summer?
by Don PeekNot only can you apply for grants in the
summer, I hardily
encourage it. Many people will not take the time during
the summer to apply for grants, and that makes your
chances of winning a grant that much better.
As we go into summer,
as you relax (hopefully) and
recharge those batteries, I challenge you to spend
just
a small part of your vacation time finding and writing
grants for your classroom or school.
It is a great
feeling to win money for a program. You
and your students get to experience materials, learning
styles, and learning environments that may never have been
possible within the regular school budget.
Although some state
and federal grants can be written
during the summer, you may want to focus on some
foundation grants. Many have quarterly deadlines that
end in the summer, making them great for summer
grant writing.
Because school money is really tight these
days, in our
great land of supply and demand, that means that
more schools will apply for grants and a lower percentage
will receive them. To get your share, you must know
where the grants are and how to write good grant
applications in order to win them.

A. Unfortunately, although a lot of grant information

available on the internet for free, it is not well-
organized and has many, many holes in it. In the long
run, a subscription to our database saves time and
