Summer is almost over. I didn't need to tell you that. As
educators, you already know it. Some of you who got the
summer off are now down to counting days, not weeks or
months, until school starts back.

When I was young, we always started school the day after
Labor Day. Now some schools start as early as the first
week of August.

As bad as that seems to some, it's not bad for students and
learning. I have seen statistics that show at-risk
students lose a large part of their previous year's gains
if they are not in summer school. Since many do not attend
summer school, a shortened summer vacation is beneficial to
both those students and the teachers who have them in class.

As you prepare to start school, get that armor out of the
closet and prepare yourself for the slings and arrows of
another school year. But also check your heart. Not for
signs of illness or weakness. Do a heart check to see
how much of yourself you have to give this year to those
students who so desperately need you.

And I'm not talking about just teachers. Every educator
makes a difference in the lives of students by the
decisions he or she makes. If the heart is right, with your
mind on what is best for students, the decisions will
always be the right ones, too.

Getting Good and Timely Information about Grants
by Don Peek

Getting good, timely information about grants is not that
easy. That's exactly why The School Funding Center set up
its database for you.

It seems that it would be easier to get such important
information. Several barriers, however, may prevent you
from receiving the grant information you need. First, most
state and federal grant notices are mailed to your central
office (occasionally to the principal's office, but not
really that frequently).

If the central office fails to send individual campuses
notice of these grants, you may never hear of them. The
chances of an individual at a campus level getting this
information directly is very, very slim.

You have to be agressive. If you work at or with the
central office, make sure you are put on a list to get
all grant notices. If you are a principal, make the same
request. If you are a teacher or work at the campus level,
work with your principal to make sure you are notified of
all relevant grants.

If you are subscribed to our database, you will know what
grants are available and when to look for these grant
notices coming to your district. You still have to be
agressive about this to keep from missing grant deadlines.

Foundation grants are even tougher. They are rarely
announced to schools. You have to seek out these
foundations. Many have websites. You can do searches on
the internet to find some of them. It's almost like a
scavenger hunt unless you have a database like ours to help,
but it's not impossible.

Once you know the program or process you need funded, make
sure you know of every state, federal or foundation grant
that supports that type of program. Be aggressive both at
the central office level and at the campus level to be put
on all grant notification lists.

Only then will you begin to be aware of and be able to
apply for the grants you need. Remember, be aggressive
in seeking out all applicable grants.

The School Funding Center's database at
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are
available. We include live links to email and websites of
granting organizations whenever available.
We also give address, phone, and fax. In other words,
the information is there so you don't waste your time
applying for funds for which you don't qualify.

Tips
===========================================================
1. Follow grant directions explicitly. Some organizations
will disqualify your application for incorrect margins
or font size.
2. Write as a team, especially if you're new at this.
Often, one person is better at the narrative part,
another with the budget.
3. Don't give up. Money is out there if you keep studying
and writing good grant applications.

===========================================================
Q & A
===========================================================

Q. What is the easiest grant money to get?

A. I don't know that any is easy, but probably the easiest
would be the smaller amounts ($500-$5000) given locally
by businesses such as Wal-Mart, Lowe's, or Starbucks.
Go to their websites for information.
