The great aim of education is not knowledge but action.

I like the quotation above. I have been in
too many
classes as a student where all that was expected of me was
to memorize facts and spit them back on a required exam.
YUK! That is education at its lowest form, and it is the
number one reason that students hate certain classes and,
sometimes, school in general.
Does your school, your campus, your class truly engage
students? Do you expect your students to actually do
something with their new knowledge?
It's still fairly early in the school year, but some of you
may already be back in the same old "rut" that you've been
in for the last few years. Maybe you have the same textbook,
the same materials, the same bulletin boards, and the natural
thing for you to do is have the same old expectations for
your students.
If what you're doing is successful and your students are
highly motivated, please never change anything you're doing
just for the sake of change. But, if you're not all that
satisfied, and your students don't seem that enthusiastic
with your lessons, why not make the simple switch to having
students prove they can DO things rather than that they can
just remember lists and facts.
And if you don't have the resources to put your new plan
into action, write a grant or two. By doing so, you
will end up with a clear plan in your own mind, and you
might just end up with some much-needed grant money as
well.

Closing the Gap
by Don Peek
One of the easiest ways to get grant money is to find an
achievement gap to close, and almost every school has some
type of achievement gap among their students.
Typically this gap exists between economically advantaged
and disadvantaged students. This particular gap exists in
many, many schools. You will often find as much as 2 years
or more difference in reading and math levels between
economically disadvantaged students and those who are not,
even though they usually sit in the very same classrooms and
hear the same lessons each day.
Many granting entities are interested in finding ways to
close these gaps and are willing to invest money in your
project to find ways to do so.
Other gaps may exist between minority and non-minority
students, and rural, suburban, and urban students. Most of
the time, these gaps can be traced back to economics.
Often, minority, rural, and inner-city students may appear
to lag in achievement because of their race or where they
live, but on closer observation, it is still typically the
fact that they are economically disadvantaged that helps to
produce these gaps.
If not, then the gap can usually be traced to reduced
expectations on the part of parents, educators, or the
community as a whole for certain groups of students.
Regardless of this, grant money may be useful in implementing
a program to reduce the gap.
A final achievement gap which is typically not explained by
economics is one that sometimes exists between male and
female students in mathematics and science. All too often
this gap can be tracked directly back to lower expectations
by teachers and the larger educational community.
Achievement gaps are most often found by comparing scores of
various groups on achievement tests. If you find one or more
of these achievement gaps in your school or classroom, just
remember that they give you an excellent reason to apply for
grants to get funds in order to reduce or eliminate the gaps.
