Education is not a preparation for life. Education is life

Many of us have felt, in some way, the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Rising gas prices in most of the country have hit our pocketbooks with great force, plus we've helped the nonprofits with the outpouring of donations from around the country.
But have the natural disasters affected schools? The answer is yes. Schools around the nation had to make room for displaced students, buses had to spend more money filling up their tanks, and the student-to-teacher ratio surely has put teachers in a bind due to lack of preparation for such a wild influx of students.
But could they have prepared themselves any better?
Probably not, only because no one could have predicted the devastation that occurred in our Southern states in the last few weeks. But there are things for which educators CAN plan and prepare.
They CAN prepare for a new computer lab, professional development courses for their staff, or an environmental program for their students that's a cut above the rest.
They CAN apply for an after-school program that seeks to serve at-risk or low-income students. They CAN do their research and nab funding for that math program that could boost SAT scores.
And with so much grant money available these days, why would you choose NOT to plan for the future? The remnants of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will affect students and educators for some time to come, I'm sure. But don't let the lack of planning negatively affect your school.
Lack of planning could very well produce devastating results.

So Much Research, So Little Time!
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin
This is the time of year when we sit around the den talking to our families, amazed that the holiday season is just weeks away.
The clock is ticking and you still haven't written that grant.
Remember: There are millions of dollars that will be awarded to other schools if you don't get to them first---or at least TRY to get them.
So how much time does it actually take to write a grant?
Can I write a grant by myself? Where should I begin?
These are just a few questions that often enter a grantee's mind as they prepare to enter the world of grant writing. But the first step you should take is to familiarize yourself with the guidelines of the organization---whether it's the federal government or a private foundation---from which you're asking monetary assistance. This all happens by doing your homework.
Preparing to apply for a grant is almost as important as applying for the grant itself. Will the grantmaker's interests and requirements for funding meet your needs? Do they focus on a primary geographic area? Do they supply continuation funding once your program is in place? These questions
can be answered by doing the appropriate research beforehand.
Most organizations also supply information about programs they DON'T fund. It would be embarrassing to spend hours writing and compiling information for your application only to have it denied because you've applied for assistance to a program that the grantor doesn't support.
The School Funding Center web site provides answers to your questions. The grants listed on the site include contact information of potential funders by providing a phone number, e-mail address and Web site. If you're still unclear of an organization's guidelines, contact them and ask them to send you a copy of their guidelines. It never hurts to ask. Not only will you be saving your time, you'll be saving theirs, as well.
We've done our homework. Now, it's time for you to do yours.
Apply for a grant today.
The School Funding Center's database at http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to email and Web sites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. How can I be certain that I'm including everything the grantor requests when I submit a grant application?
A. The Request for Proposal, or RFP, should have all pertinent information about what you should include when submitting a grant application. Most often, agencies - from the federal government to a private foundation - require items such as your tax-exempt status and school's financial records to be included with your application. If you follow their requirements to the letter, you should have no problems.
However, if there are any questions, you should always make a phone call or send an e-mail to the grantor asking for clarification.
