Things are heating up.

No, I'm not talking about the weather, though we've had a mild winter thus far in the South. I am, however, talking about new and exciting grants that are available for the taking - right now.

I personally update the information on the School Funding Center Web site, and I've seen already this year millions of dollars that could help you fund that brand-new program at your school.

Thinking of how you're going to update that computer lab while staying within the confines of your budget? Dreaming of some money for a tobacco education program to inform your students about the dangers associated with smoking?

"Thinking" and "dreaming" are fine and dandy, but "doing" is the action that gets the job done. Form your committee, compile your information and do your research. Teamwork is a wonderful asset when beginning the application process, and working together can bring positive results.

Through effective communication and a wealth of creativity, the common goal of providing the best education to your students will be met and rewarded with a grant to help turn your thoughts and dreams into a reality that will benefit your school.

Apply for a grant today.

Prove To Them That You're A Good Investment
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin

You and your staff have thought of the perfect science program to benefit the students at your school, and wish to apply for a grant to help bring the program to fruition.

You know you have money in your budget to get the ball rolling, but lack $100,000 for much needed equipment purchases that will make the program complete. Sure, $100,000 may not seem like a lot of money to you, but to the organization from which you're asking funding, it very well could be.

Look at it this way: Receiving funding from a grantor often is a matter of convincing them you're a worthwhile investment.

When you write a proposal, you must be original and write it in a way that helps the reviewer(s) understand how your organization will use the funds to fulfill the purpose of the grant.

For example, if your project includes providing microscopes for each student to accurately assess his or her findings, and you discover that the slides alone will consume one-third of your budget, you may want to consider a less expensive way to accomplish your goal.

You definitely don't want to leave the budgeting issue on the back burner, only to blow up in your face at the last minute.
Make sure to list, in detail, every material you'll need for your project - from Petri dishes to droppers - before you tally up your final dollar amount to include in your proposal.

Grantors want to know how their money will be spent. You don't want to come up short, but you sure don't want to ask for money you don't need, won't use, or can't justify.

If you have questions, contact the funder BEFORE submitting your final proposal. Remember: The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked. And if your proposal is "on the money,"
chances are likely the grantor will see your project as an investment worth funding.

The School Funding Center's database at http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to e-mail and Web sites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Tips
===========================================================

1. Write in a clear, concise manner.  Don't get wordy.
2. Follow directions exactly.  You'd be surprised how many
   grant applications are discarded for this reason.
3. Don't procrastinate.  Now is the time to write grants
   for summer school and for the fall semester.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. I'm thinking of applying for a grant through a local foundation. What happens after my proposal reaches their office?

A. Usually, the foundation's staff weeds out the obvious misfits - grants that aren't eligible, or don't fit into their guidelines for funding. The remaining proposals are researched, then presented to the board as recommendations for funding.

In most foundations, the final decision to fund a project is left up to the board members. Depending on the foundation's deadlines, it may take up to two months after they have received your proposal before you receive an answer as to whether or not your proposal was selected.
