Because of recent budget cuts in education, some which threaten the very livelihood of the core principles of education itself, school districts should consider the integration of grantwriting into their planning processes.
I recently was told by a leader in a county school system that the system "wasn't interested in purchasing a subscription to The School Funding Center Web site because
not many teachers apply for grants, so we really don't need the service."
I have to admit that I was taken aback. I guess I have just two questions to ask them: Why AREN'T your teachers applying for grants? Better still, why aren't your teachers applying for as many grants as they possibly can?
The fact is that the available monies aren't going to allocate themselves. And if you don't ask for them in the form of a well-written, well-thought out grant proposal, funds won't magically appear on your school's doorstep. I can guarantee that another district or individual school anxiously awaits the money you will pass up this year. No one is going to wait on you to take advantage of the opportunity to get money for your school. They already know how to get it---and they will. It's as simple as that.
You have nothing to lose except funding for your school's program. By taking immediate and necessary action by subscribing to The School Funding Center's database, you will have an edge the others don't. You can launch your school into a different realm from the others who believe all that free money isn't worth applying for.

Look To Your Community For Help
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin
It's amazing the wealth of knowledge that community organizations can share when you begin to apply for a grant.
And sometimes, this type of support is essential.
Individuals or groups that represent academic organizations often will be willing to support your proposal in writing, which can give an edge to the initial phase of your grant request. Letters of endorsement can often persuade a grantor to award the funds necessary for your project.
It's also important to garner support from local government agencies and public officials. Letters that can spell out your project in detail, and back it with words of encouragement, sometimes are required from certain grantmaking agencies, including the federal government.
Since months of planning may be necessary to develop these letters of endorsement, give yourself plenty of time to collect them. If your grant proposal is centered around a certain aspect of the program's value---for example, construction of a new campus facility or the hiring of competent staff members---negotiation time between all parties involved might be required.
Another method to generate community support is to meet with the top "decision makers" who may be concerned with or have a personal tie to your proposal's subject. By discussing the proposal's merits, it's possible that supportive data can be collected, which will further strengthen your proposal once it lands in the grantmaker's hands.
Leave no stone in the community unturned. Review all your options. You'll find that the end result will be worth your effort, and will leave you with permanent relationships that could benefit future endeavors.

Tips
===========================================================
1. As you begin to get ready for students to return, also
start planning for the grants you want to write.
2. Solicit help from administrators and teachers to both
research and write your grants.
3. Write several grants to address your school's weakest
area and get the money to address it.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. What should I do if my proposal is funded?
A. The first thing, before all else, is to acknowledge the funder's gift with a thank-you letter. You have been awarded the funds because your project was deemed a worthwhile investment. Let them know you appreciate it.
Second, you might receive either the check with a cover letter congratulating you on the award, or a complete contract that stipulates the submittance of a full report once the project is completed. If the contract requires your signature, make sure you know what type of report the funder is requesting and when it is due. If you still have questions, don't hesitate to contact the funder. Even if the funder doesn't require a report, it isn't a bad idea to submit one anyway. By doing so, you can show them just how their money was spent.
