Do you teach your kids to care for others?  There's no time like the holiday season to get students involved in projects to help others.  One of my favorites was to hold food drives for the local food banks.  Students really got into this especially if we gave small prizes or had a party for the winning class.  Even with these incentives, the focus was on helping those less fortunate.

Other than food, it's also a great time to share small toys, clothes, and even other necessities that some families need and will not have if others in the community do not step up and answer the challenge.

You are teaching students every day of the year.  Sometimes in direct ways, sometimes in not so direct ways.  If it's important to you to serve your community and those less fortunate, this attitude will be picked up by many of your students.  And often, it lasts a lifetime.

You don't just teach your subject areas.  You teach students, children.  Help them to love and be responsible for their fellow human beings.

Focusing on Foundation Grants

Thousands of foundations give billions of dollars to education each year.  Sometimes this foundation money is not distributed simply because foundations don't get enough quality grant applications to give all the money away.

That's not usually the case with many well-known foundations, but it is true with foundations that are not in the public eye as much.

How does that impact you and your school?  Instead of everyone trying to get Bill & Melinda Gates to give them money, they should be concentrating on the foundations that are not as popular and more closely match up with their schools' needs.  It is extremely important to find a foundation with a strong emphasis that just happens to be the same emphasis you have at your school.  That may be bringing up test scores for at-risk students, or it may be building a reading program that works equally well with all students, not just good students.

Even though more money is given to schools with high at-risk populations or more economically depressed populations, that is less true generally of foundation grants than federal or state grants.

Here's the problem.  How do you find all these foundations and find out what their main mission is?  If you search the Internet, you will find some of them.  Newsletters often list a few foundation grants.

If you want all of the foundation grants that are significant, just subscribe to our database.  We have them all.

However you happen to find the foundations, please consider applying to a few of them for grant funds.  Find those that are less competitive.  Give them a call and tell them what you are trying to accomplish and see if you can get them interested even before you submit your application.

Foundations give schools billions of dollars each year.  Why shouldn't you get some of that money for your school?

===========================================================
Tips
===========================================================

1. Apply for less popular grants worth less money.  The
   competition for them is usually not as great.
2. Call foundations and talk to the people in charge.  Often
   this can help when you apply for a grant.
3. Don't artificially match your needs to foundations.  Find
   foundations that focus on the needs and problems you have.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. Isn't this a bad time to be applying for grants?

A: Actually it's a good time.  You may want money for a spring program or a summer school program.  Many foundations have mid- to late-December filing deadlines that would allow you to write a couple of quick grants and get them in before the extended holiday season at your school.
