Reading in Your School. How Important Is It?
When I started teaching in 1973, I was 20 years old. I taught social studies in a middle school. Correction--- I tried to teach social studies in middle school. The average student reading level was two grades below where it should have been. The textbook was approximately two years above an 8th-grade level. That left about a 4-year gap between my students' abilities and the level of the text.
I began teaching remedial reading the following year. I still believe reading is the most important skill any of us teaches and instruction should continue through at least high school. So much reading is involved in science, social studies, geography, sociology, psychology, and almost every other subject we choose to teach, reading should be a prominent subject area in any school.
Granting agencies must agree with me. More grant money is available to schools to improve reading than any other single category. That's right. More grant money is available to you to improve your students' reading skills than anything else. Not only is the dollar amount more, but there are more grants available from more sources for reading than any other subject.
As we approach a new school year, ask yourself this
question: "Should our school be applying for grant money to improve the reading levels of the students in our school?"

Should Your School Be Getting Grant Money Every Year?
The answer---absolutely.
Most educators are timid about applying for a single grant when many, many schools across the United States get multiple grants every year.
How many grants does the average school receive each year?
We recently conducted a survey to find out.
Of the 248 educators who responded and actually knew how many grants their schools received, here's how the data broke out:
Question: Approximately how many state, federal, and foundation grants did your district receive last year?
Response total Response percent
1 to 5 166 67%
6 to 10 42 17%
11 to 15 15 6%
More than 15 25 10%
Even though these are district numbers, you have to realize that almost half the districts in the U.S.
contain 4 campuses or less. Many campuses receive multiple grants every year while some campuses never even apply for a grant.
Did you also know that enough grant money is available each year (more than $6.5 billion) that every campus in the United States could receive a grant for $60,000 every year?
School will be starting before long. Right now is the time to be applying for grants for both the fall and spring semesters. If you will apply for grants, and continue to apply for them consistently, you will get grant money for your school.
