Are Your Students Okay?

We feed them free breakfast, and we feed them free lunch.
That's a lot better than when I started teaching.  We weren't always sure that our students had an opportunity to eat before they came to class.  Can you imagine trying to learn with an empty, rumbling stomach?

But you know, hunger is not the only thing that can keep a child from learning?  Many circumstances are beyond a child's control (and yours, too, for that matter).

Be sure to look for signs of problems with your students.
Are they abused in any way?  Do they come from poverty-stricken homes?  Do they appear to have emotional problems?  Do they have undiagnosed learning problems?

No, you may not be able to solve the problems yourself.  No, it's not really your job.  But you may be able to at least refer a student or two to someone with the skills to help them cope.  It could make all the difference in the world.

Okay, in my opinion, it is a part of your job.  Help your students any way you can.  You can't save them all.  Save what you can.

We list grants available to schools for:  At-risk, family services, homeless, health, disabilities, after-school.

The Clock Is Ticking

If you've read this newsletter over the past few years, you know that I'm really into assessment.  You need a goal.  You need to assess constantly to make sure you are moving toward that goal in a timely manner.

For most of you the school year started 8-10 weeks ago.  It is certainly time you made at least initial assessments to make sure your program (whatever that program may be) is getting the results you planned.

Why?  Because you may have a great reading program that could be working better if you had more books?  You may have a math program that could be working better if you had more manipulatives.  You might have an at-risk program that could be running much more efficiently if you had more aides.

To get those additional materials or personnel units, you may have to write grants.  You need to begin them now if you need the money for the spring semester or for summer school.

Most of you have just a little over 30 school days before the
end of the year.  Grants don't write themselves.   With the
research, getting others involved, and doing the actual writing, you need to be seriously considering the grants you need to apply for within the next week or two.

Assess the needs you have in your programs now.  Begin searching for the grants you need now.  Don't procrastinate.

And when you're in a situation where time is of the essence, you need to use a good, comprehensive grant database to match your needs with the grants available to you.

That's where The School Funding Center will help you.

The School Funding Center Grant Database is the premier school grant database.  It is more comprehensive and up-to-date than any other grant database that you will find.

Join us today.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. How difficult is it to apply for a grant?

A: Very large state or federal grants are not that easy.
You might need some help from someone more experienced
if you are a novice grant writer.  Foundation grants tend
to be much less difficult and are a good place to start if
you are new to grant writing.
