Two Strategies for Getting the Grants You Write
by Don Peek
Your grant request, regardless of the reason you are
writing it, should include 1 of 2 strategies to convince
the granting agency you will be successful in achieving
positive results with the grant money you seek.
The first strategy is to find a program or process that
is
currently being successfully used by another school and to
write your grant with the clear intention of duplicating
the program in your own school with similar results.
If you use this strategy, you don't want to get too
creative. If the program is already working in another
school, the main focus should be in replicating that
same program as nearly as possible. It is important
that you find a school with a very similar population to
your school successfully using the program you want to
implement.
If the populations don't match well, your grant proposal
will not be strong. If they do, you have an extremely
good chance of convincing a granting agency to invest in
your proposal because it is highly likely to produce
positive results.
The second strategy is completely different. Using this
strategy, your grant proposal gives evidence that you have
a new and innovative program that SHOULD improve
performance if implemented according to the guidelines
you propose in your grant application.
When you use this strategy, you will need sufficient
theoretical support for your idea to justify the grantor
supplying the money for you to implement it. Citing
research or various authorities in the field will help
to support your application.
Even when you use this second strategy, however, it is
always a good idea to test your innovations on small
populations first and diligently keep records of the
progress they make. It is then much easier to justify
your program for the larger population when you have
already spent the time and money to prove the worth of the
program on a test group.

1. Spend as much time planning to write your grant proposal
as you do writing it. It will pay dividends if you do.
2. Write with a partner if you're new at writing grant
proposals. One of you can do the narrative; the other
can work on the financials and the budget.
3. Don't give up. Thousands of grants are available. Keep
writing until you are successful.
