How does it feel to be an educator in the greatest nation
in the world? In the middle of political battles and
especially during an election year, it may be a little
harder to remember why the United States is so great.
Well, let's reflect a bit.
In this country we believe that everyone has a right to an
education. No one is locked away at home. No one is
apprenticed as a young teenager. We believe that everyone
has the right to be able to read, write, and do enough
math to conduct routine business.
It's true that our test scores don't always match up with
some other nations around the world. But most of the time,
I don't think the test takers match up very well either.
I challenge other nations to educate their total populace
the way we do.
But do you want to know the real difference in American
education? It's the educators themselves. Our educators
are willing to take the most brilliant GT student or the
most damaged school-aged crack baby and do their very
best to make sure both children reach their potential.
Let other nations keep their test scores. I'll
take our
educational system, our students, and our teachers every
time.

Creating Positive Memories
by Don Peek
When I was a middle school principal, one of the challenges
I gave the teachers in our building was to come up with
a project, an assignment, or an activity that the students
would remember for the rest of their lives. I thought it
was important for students to have positive memories of
school. I still do.
In my wife's first grade class, her students always remember
the papier-mâché dinosaur they build and paint in her room.
Not all projects require a lot of funding.
But in our middle school, students remember that they all
grew a flower for their moms on Mother's Day in the
hundred-foot greenhouse we purchased and erected for our
science classes. They also remember the opportunity they
had to take piano every day at school. Every child, rich
or poor could learn to play piano in our piano lab. They
went to piano every day for all 3 years they were in our
building if they wanted to.
More than 75 students took piano the first year we put the
lab in. More than 85 took piano the second year.
The dinosaurs don't require a grant. The
greenhouse and
piano lab did.
Projects such as these help make school a positive place,
give students unusual, enriching experiences, and create
memories that they never forget. That makes these
projects excellent grant topics. Grantors will fund them
because of the impact they potentially have on learning
and because they can be replicated in other schools if
they are successful.
This year, I challenge you to create memories for your
students. If the idea you choose is relatively complex
and expensive, I challenge you to write a grant to fund
it. I guarantee you will be rewarded for your efforts.
Those students may just remember you in a positive
light, too.
The School Funding Center's database at
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are
available. We include live links to email and websites of
granting organizations whenever available.
We also give address, phone, and fax. In other words,
the information is there so you don't waste your time
applying for funds for which you don't qualify.

Tips
===========================================================
1. Don't write just any grant. Find one that
you're
interested in and determined to win.
2. Write as many state and regional foundation grants as
you can. The competition is often less than for a
national grant.
3. Don't give up. Money is out there if you keep studying
and writing good grant applications.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. What should I look for in a grant-writing manual?
A. They are fairly rare, but you should look for a manual
that deals only with education grants. There are
hundreds of grant manuals available, but you don't want one
that gives 75% of its pages to other types of grants.
