Education does not mean teaching people to know what they

We are truly in an information age. Newspapers, books,
videos, magazines; the list goes on and on. But today information is gathered and routed so quickly that even the daily newspaper is too slow.
While the internet hasn't changed our lives quite as
quickly as many investors thought it would a few years ago, there's no arguing that it is fast becoming the preferred choice of most to get timely news. This is especially true of educators. Getting good information in a timely way is important for busy educators.
Fortunately, there are many, many websites (several
listed below) and newsletters for educators. One of the
best we have found for administrators is at Education World.
"Education World -- The Educator's Best Friend," one of
the original comprehensive Web sites in education, and
the #1 result for searches of the word ~education~ on
Google and other major search engines, has a great
newsletter for school administrators. By subscribing, you
receive a practical article from EdWorld's "Principals
Files" team, a "Principal Pointer of the Week," and
numerous other articles tailor-made for administrators -
many of them contributed, in fact, by other working
administrators. Also, you get a weekly "top ten" lineup
of great lesson-planning and other articles you can pass
along to your teachers, a weekly roundup of the
major education stories in the news, and, to cap it
off, some education humor. Sign up for The
Administrator's Desk - it's free - at:

Time to Assess Your Needs
by Don Peek
Most schools need money. Sometimes money problems arise from available funds being spent in non-critical areas. Often,
however, the needs of certain classrooms, campuses, and even
entire districts are so great that finding additional
money is essential for students to be successful.
January is a great time for schools to assess their needs,
prioritize them, and find additional grant money in order
to better serve students and ensure their success.
Test scores make assessment easy for subjects such as math
and reading. If your students are 2 or more years behind,
that is a critical problem. You need a plan to improve
this performance, and you need funds to implement your
plan.
But what about problems such as high rates of absenteeism, unusually high numbers of discipline problems, drug use, teenage pregnancy, etc. These are all critical issues that schools must contend with every day.
These problems all need to be measured. If they are,
indeed, a problem in your school, it may be time to
build a plan to address them and to seek grant money to
help resolve them.
And if you don't want to spend days and weeks looking up
all the grants available to you, go to The School
Funding Center database where we list them all for you in
one place.
Remember, first assess your needs. Devise a plan. Let The School Funding Center help you find the funds you need.
The School Funding Center's database at
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to email and websites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Tips
===========================================================
1. Often regional service centers can help you compare
your scores with those of other schools in your area.
2. Grant money is given to those who apply. If you never
apply, you won't get the money you need.
3. Use your latest test scores to prove your need for a
grant. Use several years' scores if you have an ongoing
problem.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. What are my chances of getting grant money for my school?
A. Very, very good. More than 110,000 grants are awarded
to schools in the U.S. every year. That's at least one
for every campus. But thousands of campuses never apply
for grant money. That means that if you will apply for
several grants, the chances are excellent you will win
money for one or more of them.
