Well, it's almost May. Getting close to summer and
vacation time. What are your plans? Heading for the
mountains? Maybe to the beach? It's true we're no longer
an agrarian society, but educators and summer just go
together. Summer vacation is truly one of the great perks
of this profession. Now, if we just made enough money to
be able to DO something during these extended vacations.
Why not make plans to spend one week, just a five-day week,
writing a grant for your class or school? There are some
great foundation grants out there, and many of them either
have four deadlines each year or no deadline at all. They
are perfect for the summer.
You may not realize it, but even a $3-5,000 grant can make
a tremendous difference to a class that's been on a tight
budget, even a huge difference to a school that's been on
a tight budget. It can mean training, equipment, field
trips, materials, or even a little extra help in the
classroom.
You may not consider yourself a grant writer, but summer
is the time to try new things when you don't have the
pressure of lesson plans, evaluations, or other stressful
situations. Get Dr. Porter's step-by-step grant-writing

grant application if you've never completed one before.
Yes, it's almost summer vacation, but you may never have

Stop Spending Your Own Money

Yes, teachers and other educators spend their own money,
often on regular supplies for the classroom. It's so bad,
the government gave us a special tax deduction for it.
To be honest, though, when I was a middle school principal
I asked my teachers to never spend their own money. We had
plenty of money to run our school because we wrote grants
and formed partnerships with community businesses. Our
school had 500 students. In a small town you have the very
rich and the very poor. Unfortunately, most of our students
were on the poor side. Also, we had a very low tax base.
It didn't bother us. With our grants and partnerships, we
brought in over $300,000 in the 3 years I was principal.
We had plenty of money to do whatever we needed. I never
remember turning down any teacher for anything s/he wanted
in the classroom. Can your school make that claim? Can
you even imagine what an extra $100,000 per year can mean
to a campus?
Anyone can whine and cry about not having money. And, I
admit, sometimes it is just easier to spend your own money
than to go through the requisition hassle. But why not
go out and get that money from the government, foundations,
and businesses that are more than willing to help you.
Read below just a few of the grant opportunities available
to you. Then, go to our database and do a few free searches.
