I recently spoke with a middle-school principal who is in the midst of finalizing plans for the science and technology magnet program my son will attend in August. Grants were applied for and awarded to the school to assist with new equipment, such as laptops and digital cameras, as well as building expenses, including a walkway that will connect the classroom to a nearby museum.
While kids are relishing the longer summer vacation given them this year, chances are you educators are using at least part of your "vacation" to plan for the upcoming school year.
Many of the grants provided by the federal government have deadlines which pass right before the school year begins.
I'm sure it would be disheartening to miss one of those deadlines, thus missing a great opportunity to get monies for your school. It might be an opportunity that could cost your school thousands of dollars.
The School Funding Center Web site is a powerful tool, and can be utilized to seek out monies which are available nationally to help provide much-needed programs, supplies, or equipment for your school.
What area of your school could use some improvement? Yes, many students and educators have an has an extended break this year.
But the new school year will be here before you know it. Don't you want to be adequately prepared?

First-time Grant Writer? Don't Sweat It!
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin
If you're getting ready to sit down and write your first grant, you may be a little nervous. The compilation of paperwork, the terminology, making sure to meet that deadline---all the details can seem a bit overwhelming.
So, what is the best way to lay out your proposal? Can you ask for more money than you actually need? Will your idea be original enough to catch the grantor's attention?
Before you ever apply for that first grant, you must have a game plan. Get the support you need from colleagues, your principal or superintendent to set a goal and make it happen.
Remember to have a clear, concise plan in mind before the application process begins.
The Request for Proposal (RFP) is the primary source of information where you'll find exactly what the grantor will fund. It's important NOT to make the grantor conform to your ideas; rather, stick to the RFP's guidelines and see if your ideas mesh with the grantor's funding priorities.
If your plan is to apply for funding from a private foundation, stay away from projects that seem "risky;" having a unique idea for your curriculum is fine, but it would probably be a horrible idea to ask for monies for a skydiving trip so your students can learn a little more about meteorology!
But do you wish there was an innovative way your students could learn more about science and the environment? Don't just apply for a blanket environmental education grant. Find an agency out there who funds the addition of a greenhouse, garden, or an aviary to your campus. Some agencies fund projects which don't fall into the category of "humdrum" or "general" curriculum.
Spend a little extra time searching for them.
Check, double check and triple check your application! Make sure there are no typos, and that your plan is easily understood. Ask a colleague not involved with the proposal to read over the information your team has compiled. Another set of eyes never hurts.
And don't get discouraged if you get a rejection letter. Just remember---if at first you don't succeed, try, try again! Your time and effort will be worth it when your students succeed in a fun and exciting new program at their school.
The School Funding Center's database at http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to e-mail and Web sites of granting organizations whenever available.
Usually, address, phone, and/or fax is included.
