When you sell a man a book, you don't just sell him 12 ounces of paper and ink and glue. You sell him a whole new life.---Christopher Darlington Morley, 1917

I found out today that my son needs braces. I sure wish there were grant monies available to help offset the high cost of orthodontia.

As a parent, you want your kid to be healthy. As an educator, you want your students to be scholastically healthy. More so, you want them to be adequately prepared for the next grade level. By giving them opportunities to participate in the best programs, with the best books and the best materials, you can ensure they'll have the best opportunities money can buy.

But where does that money come from? Is your district on a "tight budget," or one that has been the victim of county government budget cuts? My county's schools almost fell into that pitfall a few weeks back, as nearly $1.3 million was threatened to be cut from the education budget.

With 52 schools in the county, can you imagine the many people who would've suffered from such a major hit in funding?
The staff, yes, and the programming, surely. But ultimately, the students would've suffered the most. You've heard about the the arts or music programs that vie to stay off the chopping block.
What will the county commissioners cut next?  Foreign language, technology? In most 21st-century schools, both of these, and probably many more, are vital to efficient learning.

Thankfully, the board members in my county voted to find other ways to save money rather than yanking over $1 million from the education budget. They did, however, eliminate the Drug Awareness and Resistance Education, or DARE, program. And with the shape our schools are in these days, it's a shame that program had to go.

I urge you not to hang in limbo hoping your programs will be funded this year. Instead, do some advance research and find outside funding for your school. Do it today.

"Show Me The Money!" (And say "thanks" when you get it)
  by Jennifer Kellar Erwin

Many of you might remember that line from the movie, "Jerry Maquire," starring Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. But when it comes to grant writing, and the subsequent funding of a proposal, that term takes on a whole new meaning.

Remember when your mother made you write thank-you notes after getting gifts for your birthday? No one HAD to get you a gift; rather, they wanted to get you a gift to celebrate the happy occasion. The same theory applies to the grant makers who award monies to fund your project. They're not obligated to do it as an ATM is required to disperse cash when you enter your PIN. Rather, they want to do it to help fund worthwhile, educational programs for the children who participate in them.

In last month's newsletter, you may recall some of the definitions applicable to grant writing, as well as proper etiquette when writing, and sending, your proposal. But one important thing I failed to mention was making sure to say thanks for the financial gift you receive.

According to the "experts," there's nothing wrong with sending a thank-you note to a funder. In fact, it's a vital step that should not be left out. What's more, you should write one whether or not you receive funding.

As insignificant or trite as it may sound, sending a simple thank-you note is an appropriate way to acknowledge the grantor, and to make them aware of your gratitude. The note doesn't have to be fancy, and should be kept short and to-the-point. But the thank-you should have a personal connotation to it; maybe inviting the grantor to check out your school's web site, or letting them know just how much their gift has helped your school.

As one organization put it, "If you don't have time to thank donors, you don't have time to have donors." So, put to use the valuable lesson your mother taught you. Make it a point to say "thanks" for the gifts you receive---and even the gifts you don't.

The School Funding Center's database at http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to email and Web sites of granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Tips
===========================================================

1. Planning is important in grant writing.  Plan first;
   then write.
2. Don't go overboard, but share you excitement in the
   program you are trying to fund.
3. While you can't predict the outcome of a program funded
   by grant money, make every effort to project the
   positive result your school will get from being funded.

Q & A
===========================================================

Q. What happens if I miss the application deadline?

A. Consider it an opportunity missed. Almost all organizations require the proposal to be in their office by a certain time and date. If you're late, chances are you've missed out. In addition, lack of concern for deadlines may give them reason to not fund your projects or programs in the future.
