Every time you stop a school, you will have to build a jail.
What you gain at one end you lose at the other. It's like feeding a dog on its own tail - it won't fatten the dog.

Welcome back!

Summer's officially over, and teachers, parents and, yes, even students, I suspect, are glad to be back in the swing of things. It's not too late to begin researching areas where your school could use some improvement.

I attended my son's middle-school orientation and learned that the school is highly-equipped. The online resources are top-notch and readily available, and partnerships with local non-profits have been established, all with the help of grant monies acquired through private foundations. Some of his homework will even be completed online - quite an advancement from my days with nothing more than a piece of paper and a No. 2 pencil. This school definitely did its homework - and it shows.

As the weeks pass, more state and federal agencies will be posting new grant information and funds available for the taking. There will be millions of dollars available to fund a technology, math, or science program at your school. The information compiled for you on The School Funding Center site is easy to navigate and will save you hours upon hours
of research.

The need for top-notch programs in our school systems isn't going away. But the money you need won't be there if someone gets it before you do. Do your homework and find a grant today.

Have a great school year!

Give Students Something To Look Forward To
  by Jennifer Kellar Erwin

In last month's newsletter, I wrote about my county cutting the Drug Awareness and Resistance Education, or DARE, program from the education budget. Oddly enough, the policemen and women who were the facilitators for this program had one chief
concern:

They claimed that once the fifth graders in the county participated in the program, there was no follow-up; thus, the kids were just as susceptible to use drugs because there were no programs in place to continue the positive reinforcement this program provided elementary school children - especially the children who were classified as "at risk." They felt, in essence, that the program, on its own, did little to no good.

I wonder if they know about grant monies that are available to provide funding for anti-bullying or drug awareness programs? I hope they didn't just give up before they researched other options.

If kids don't have programs, or curricula, for that matter, to advance them to the next level, how smart will they become?
What will their chances of success really be? If a sixth-grader studied fifth-grade math until high school, what is the likelihood he'd ace freshman algebra? It's an easy question to answer: No chance at all.

If you're looking for additional funding for programs that are lacking at your school, look no further. The School Funding Center was established by an educator - and someone who knows how to get money to fund programs without waiting on the "no" or "it's not in the budget this year" from the powers that be.

Preparation is key to a solid, educational foundation. Educators must better prepare children for their future - but they also must ensure that they're waiting for the kids when they get there.

The School Funding Center's database at http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to e-mail and web sites of granting organizations whenever available.   Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Tips
===========================================================

1. Make sure your grant application identifies a problem
   that needs addressing.
2. Make sure you have statistical information to back up
   your concerns.
3. Make sure the money you're requesting fixes or at least
   alleviates the problem.

Q & A
===========================================================

Q. Do I have to get permission before writing a grant for my school?

A. Yes, for two main reasons: First, grants that are more than several thousand dollars often require the signature of a senior official before they can be implemented into the school system. Second, grants obligate the school system, not just the person who applies.  If the terms of the grant are not fulfilled, the school may be responsible for all or part of the money that was spent.
