It's safe to say that in certain parts of our nation, there has been an increase in Hispanic students in schools. In my hometown newspaper, an Associated Press story reported that North Carolina public schools saw a 153-percent increase in the number of children of immigrants from 1990 to 2000.
Many of these students don't speak English, but must still pass standardized math and reading tests each year under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which, of course, makes teachers' jobs increasingly difficult, the story said.
With regards to education, finding out what works for immigrant children is important, especially since the language of understanding is vital to their educational success.
Language, whether spoken or written, affects every subject a child must master in order to advance to the next grade level.
Reading, writing, math, science and social studies all practice different forms of language through numbers, words, or formulative exercises.
The School Funding Center website lists thousands of organizations that can help educators get the funding they need for special classes, such as English as a Second Language
(ESL) or other programs that cater specifically to a high-need population.
Don't wait another minute to recognize such an important need as this before putting an effective plan in motion. A grant that serves these needs may help educators secure a child's educational future, as well as break down the barriers that could hinder it.

Students' Needs Are an Ever-Changing Business
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin
As I stated above, the needs of individual schools and districts are ever-changing. One minute, it seems that everything is rolling along smoothly; the next, there seems to be an influx of special-needs students. In turn, teachers and administration are caught "holding the bag," wondering what they can do to fix problem areas.
Just as the needs in schools change so does your focus when writing a grant. Whether you're seeking monetary assistance from a private foundation or the federal government, you must have a clear idea about the greatest need of your school and a clear plan to get the funding you need.
Many professional grant writers have said that the most important section of your grants is the needs section. Often, data must be collected to help you best assess the overall scenario. Relevant information, such as demographic data, facility conditions and student enrollment, may be necessary to include in your proposal in order to best communicate and determine the most pressing issues at your school.
Numbers are important, too, when taking into account what program would be best suited for your students. How many students are currently in a special education class? ESL class? Are these students achieving goals as they should be, or is there an area that lacks the development to launch the program, and the students, to the next level?
While numbers and statistics can be a necessary inclusion in a grant, be careful not to overdo it. Bogging down the grant with too many numbers, stats, or wordy explanations might bore the reader to tears, and lessen your chances to receive funding.
Remember to carefully read and understand the grantor's funding priorities. Make sure your needs fit into the guidelines and that your program will be funded based on the grantor's requirements. Be sure to keep your target population at the center of your proposal.
By keeping the most current, up-to-date funding information available to your school, The School Funding Center's website is ever-changing, as well. The information we've compiled can help you get the needs of your school met.
Begin writing that grant today.
The School Funding Center's database at:

will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to email and websites of
granting organizations whenever available.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. What does it take to be a successful grant writer?
A. There are many things you can do to become a successful grant writer. Making a commitment is the first step to writing a successful proposal. Look for help from a staff of people who can help identify a problem or need at your school, then determine a viable solution to that problem or need. Finding the right funder is also important. Be sure your need meets the funder's eligibility requirements. By doing so, your chances of receiving funding will improve significantly.
