Summer vacation is here for some of you.  It won't be long until it's here for most everyone else.  This could be a time for reflection.  You could think of all the different things you could have done during the school year to make
it a better year for your students.   That would be good.

You could certainly do some professional development, too.
There are always some good classes and workshops through the summer for you to attend.  You can never get too much education or develop too many skills.

You could even get crazy and rewrite all your lessons plans, rework your budgets, revamp time lines, and review policies.
The list could go on and on and on.

But you know what?  Summer is for relaxation.  The very best thing you can do is recharge those batteries and be ready for the school year to begin three months from now.
A tired, frustrated teacher or administrator is never as effective as one that is rested and refreshed.

Look forward to the summer like students do.  Use it as a time to do the activities that you enjoy.  Go to the lake, travel, spend time with the kids and grand kids.  Just enjoy your life.

Educators get more time to relax and rest.  Guess what?
There's a reason for that.  Enjoy your summer; be ready for the new school year. This one's over.

The Case for Applying for Grants in the Summer

While our editorial encouraged you to rest and relax during the summer, I will tell you that summer is an excellent time to apply for grants.  There are a number of reasons for this.

1) There is less competition because many educators will NOT apply for grants during the summer.  If you will, then you have a better chance of yours being funded.

2) You won't be distracted as you are during the regular school year.  You may have great intentions, but the days during the regular school year are hectic for both teachers and administrators.  It's so much easier to focus on grant applications during the summer when not so much is going on around you.

3) Foundation grants usually have multiple deadlines (2,3, or 4 times per year) or no deadline at all which makes them perfect for writing summer applications.

There are other good reasons for writing foundation applications during the summer. There are literally tens of thousands of foundation grants available each year.  Your chance of getting one or more of these is excellent.

Also, the applications are generally much simpler and faster to complete.  That means in the same amount of time, you can apply for more of these foundation grants which once again increases your chances of being awarded one or more of these grants.

I'm not suggesting you spend you whole summer in an office applying for one grant after another.  Take a couple of days each week or a couple of weeks during the summer and apply for several grants.  Come fall or second semester when you have that extra grant money, you'll be glad you did.

Oh yes, don't forget---we have all the information you need about these grants in The School Funding Center Grant Database.

Tips
===========================================================

1. Make sure your application is free of spelling and
grammatical errors.  They are a distraction to the reader.
2. Apply for several grants, not just one.  This increases
your odds of having your project funded.
3. Stay focused.  Don't include unrelated information.
Stick to the topic and be convincing about why you need
   the grant money.
