The most extraordinary thing about a really good teacher is that he or she transcends accepted educational methods.
Such methods are designed to help average teachers approximate the performance of good teachers.

Chances are by the time you read this newsletter your school is back in session. Are you fiscally prepared for this brand-new school year?

I know all of you have been busy with vacations this summer.
But while you've been lounging in the sun, the federal government and your state departments of education have been busy distributing requests for proposals. Have you answered their requests by applying for the grants that are available?

I had lunch with my son's sixth-grade language arts teacher a few weeks ago and had a lengthy discussion with her about The School Funding Center and the services it provides. The excitement in her eyes was evident as she, through my explanation, finally grasped the full impact of this one-stop site that would give her all the information she needed to apply for grants for her school.

Need new computers? She does, and already has begun the search to find an organization that will fund a mobile computer lab. Is the money in your school's budget to launch that innovative math or science program that will take your students to the next level of learning? If not, a grant could help you implement the program and, quite possibly, make it a permanent part of your school's curriculum.

So shake the sand out of your shoes and get busy. The School Funding Center isn't going anywhere. By taking advantage of this service, you and your students will reach new heights in both your educational careers.

Guaranteed.

We Are Writing A Grant: Who Needs To Be Involved?
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin

It's always smart to organize a grant writing team when preparing to apply for funding from a federal or state organization, or a local foundation. If you realize from the start that you don't have to be the "lone soldier" in this process, the better off you, and your school, will be.

Classroom teachers are key players in the team, as they offer current hands-on experience some administrators lack.
Teachers can effectively describe the students' needs and what they feel is needed to improve classroom performance.

In addition to classroom teachers, every grant writing team should strongly consider the inclusion of staff who are responsible for making administrative decisions for the project. School districts are often organized differently, so knowing whom to contact beforehand about different funding programs will save time and avoid confusion in the long run. Here are some examples of staff you should consider including in the planning process:

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Elementary or Secondary Director of Curriculum Special Programs Director Coordinator of Bilingual, ESL, or ELL Services Director of Special Education Services Grants & Funding Coordinator Instructional Technology Director Career & Technology Coordinator Community Relations Coordinator Campus Administrators

The business office for your district should be able to direct you to the most appropriate person to answer your questions.  As a general rule, federal and state funds are fiscally managed by the business office, so you should have no difficulty in finding the answers you need to proceed with your project.

The School Funding Center's database at:
http://www.getresponse.com/t/3040753/370960/129343344/
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to e-mail and Web sites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Tips
===========================================================

1. Make sure your grant application looks professional
   and is of the highest quality.
2. Quantity is important, too.  Not the length of your
   proposal, but increasing the number of applications
   you submit increases your chances of getting grant money.
3. Get your facts and figures straight during the planning
   stage.  Use them to convince the grant reader of your
   needs.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. My staff and I are trying to get the most amount of money for a brand-new technology program at our school. We are almost 100-percent certain that we'll need $15,000 for start-up funds, but aren't sure if we should ask for funding for additional elements to the program. Any advice?

A: When seeking funding for a program start from your own strategic plan: What activities will move you forward and what they will cost? Do not change or create programs solely for funding purposes, but be sure to ask for what you need from the get-go. And remember: You will have to report to the funder how the monies were allocated. Have clear, concise ideas from the start. Don't make it up as you go along.
