Setting Goals and Objectives for Your Grant Program
by Don Peek

I had a call a few weeks ago from a board member asking
how easy it was for school districts to get grant money to
increase their general fund. I almost laughed. I
thought he was kidding.

If you happen to find a foundation or government agency
that WILL give you money just to increase your general
fund, PLEASE, PLEASE give me a call. I have a few credit
card debts I'd like to have them help me with.

Some granting agencies may have rules and restrictions
less stringent than others, but you must have very clear
and very precise goals when you submit a grant application
of any kind if you expect to receive grant money.

Educators are generally familiar with goals and objectives
for the classroom. Writing grant goals and objectives are
similar. Goals are broader. Objectives are more specific.

In a reading classroom, your goal might be to improve the
reading comprehension of all your students during the year.
More specifically between the STAR reading pre- and
post-tests given in September and May, you want your
students to average 1.5 years of growth in reading
comprehension.

For a grant, you might be trying to improve the reading
comprehension of your 7th graders. One specific objective
might be for at least 95% of your 7th graders to score at
or above grade level in reading comprehension on the
Iowa Test of Basic Skills.

This goal and objective is specific and measurable. You
have every reason to believe you can take the grant money
you're asking for, put your new program and/or materials in
place, achieve the goal you've set, and have hard evidence
of having achieved the goal. If you say you'll provide
anything less, you have a weak grant application.

What is your goal?

100% of our students will pass the state technology exam
by the end of 8th grade.

25% more of female students will enroll in and pass
advanced mathematics and science courses.

Within the next 2 years, our dropout rate will decrease
by 15%.

These are clear, concise, and measurable.

You still must have a good needs assessment, a good program
that will produce these results, and a specific
evaluation procedure. But once you have clear goals and
objectives, most of your grant application will fall into
place. In fact, the entire application will be built
around your goals and objectives.

Tips
===========================================================

  1. Before any house is built, it must have a plan. The
grant application is the blueprint for your program.

  2. Collect all pertinent student data (economic status,
failure rate, dropout rate, race, gender, etc.) before
    writing your needs assessment.

  3. It may pay you to hire a professional grant writer if
the grant is particularly large or highly competitive.

Q & A
===========================================================

Q. Why should I bother trying to get grants when hundreds
of other schools are trying to get the same money?

A. First, it might surprise you how much grant money never
gets awarded simply because enough schools do not apply.

Second, this is not the lottery. If your school has
real needs, financial and otherwise, you have a better
chance of getting money than those less needy.

Third, if you are a good grant writer, you can get grant
money. A strong, well-written application is the key.
