Finding the Funds

With over 100,000 grants available to schools, it seems as if it would be a snap to get money for your school. It's really not all that bad IF you follow the proper procedures for getting grant money. The first step is matching your school's need with a grantor's criteria.

Obviously, if the granting agency gives money only for math and science programs, and you apply for funds to enhance your physical education program with no tie-ins to math or science, your application is going to be rejected. Unfortunately, the whole process is a little more difficult than that. You have to make sure that the granting agency gives money to schools in your state, with your demographic make-up, with your test scores, etc.

Attention to these details ahead of time can save you hours of application preparation. It is so important, you should do several things to make sure your school does indeed match the criteria.

First, read all information from whatever source you first hear of the grant.

Second, go to their web site (if they have one) and read carefully everything that gives any hints of criteria, obvious or not so obvious..

Third, email, or better yet call, the person in charge of grants at the organization. Discuss your situation, your needs, and their program. This relationship may help you get your grant later.

Finally, once you get the application and begin to fill it out, check once again for criteria that may exclude your school.

The number one reason for grant applications being rejected is that they do not match the funding entity's criteria to begin with. What a waste of time for everyone.

Q. Why don't I already know about all the grants available? It looks as if companies would contact schools and let them know about grant opportunities.

A. Unfortunately, that's just not the case most of the time. Many, many companies and individuals treat their foundations almost as an afterthought. Millions and millions of dollars are available. They just don't get the word out. Many have web sites with the information on them, but how do you know about the web site? Good question. The only way to really find all grant sources available to you is with an interactive database. You put in your criteria. The database gives you the matching results.
