What Type of Grant Is Easiest to Win
by Don Peek

All too often folks who are just beginning to write grants
go after large, federal grants just because the money
looks so appealing. Unfortunately, many of those are the
hardest to get because of all the competition, and you can
bet professional grant writers are writing many of the
applications that get the money.

Why not go after one or more regional or foundation
grants? Often the money is not that much less, and the
competition is very often much less fierce. In fact, a
lot of foundation money around the country never is
awarded simply because not enough schools apply for the
money.

Foundation grants are also appealing because the
application is often not as difficult or lengthy as a
federal grant. That does NOT mean you should be
less conscientious about writing your grant application.
It usually simply means that it will not take quite as
long and may allow you to apply for several grants
instead of only one. This increases your odds of getting
grant money for your school.

There are two major problems with applying for foundation
funds. Be absolutely sure they fund the type of program
you are writing into your proposal. Go to their web site
if they have one and read all you can about their
objectives. Call their director if possible and discuss
your school and your plan to apply. The better you know
the foundation staff, and they know you, the better your
chance of getting money for your school.

The second problem is getting information about local,
regional, and state foundations. There are thousands
of them, and unfortunately, they don't send out mail to
schools seeking proposals. You have to find them.

That's one of the main reasons The School Funding Center
built the huge database that it did. So you can easily
find all the grant money that is available to your school.

Tips
===========================================================

1. Write your grant in clear, concise language. Don't try
to impress. Be straightforward and direct with a clear
purpose evident.

2. Don't be lazy. Even if a vendor provides you with
information, rewrite it in your own words. Grant
readers quickly recognize templates.

3. It may pay you to hire a professional grant writer if
the grant is particularly large or highly competitive.

Q & A
===========================================================

Q. What is "the most important" element in getting grant
money?

A. Without a doubt, the most important element is matching
your needs with the objectives of the granting agency.

You may have the greatest reading program in the world
lined up for summer school, but if the grantor is giving
funds for summer science programs you're probably out of
luck.

However, don't overlook the fact that you might develop
a tremendous reading program centering on science,
scientists, inventions, what the future holds for the
next generation, etc.

Just make sure you match it as closely as possible with
the objectives set out by the granting agency.
