The Best Time To Apply for Grants
by Don Peek
What is the best time to apply for grants? If I had to
give a very short answer to that question, it would be,
"Now!"
Most schools don't get the grants they need
simply because they don't ever apply. If that is true of
your school, then procrastination in the biggest
problem, and the way to overcome it is to start filling
out grant applications today. Not tomorrow, today.
It would be unusual to find a time during the year that
you couldn't apply for one grant or another, but there
are certain times of the year that are better than
others.
For instance, many foundations accept applications on
a quarterly basis. That typically means that March 31,
June 30, September 30, and December 31 are application
deadlines.
If you don't get your application in to these foundations
by those dates, you may have to wait 90 days or more to
get a response from them. That makes now, mid-March, an
ideal time to apply for many foundation grants.
But there are a ton of state and federal grants available
now also. Money that is earmarked for summer school
programs and programs that will begin in the fall semester
are usually seeking applications now so winners can
be determined and the money distributed in a timely manner.
These types of grants follow the cycle of the school year.
Once school starts in the fall, another cycle of grants
will be available for the spring semester.
Again, this time of year is ideal to apply for grants
for summer school and for the fall semester.
I will issue one strong word of caution about deadlines.
If you miss a foundation deadline, you may have to wait
an additional quarter to get a decision on your application.
On the other hand, if you miss a state or federal deadline,
your application goes into the trash. It won't even be
considered.
Don't procrastinate. Get your application written and
mailed so that it is received well before the deadline.
Question: When is the ideal time to apply for grants?
Answer: As soon as you finish reading this newsletter.

Tips
===========================================================
1. Don't procrastinate. Begin applying for grants today.
2. Follow directions carefully. The wrong font size or
incorrect margins may disqualify your application.
3. If you're just starting to write grants, start small
and build your writing skills before going after the
highly competitive grants.

school. For access, go to:

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. My school needs money. What do I put in my grant
application which would best help us get grant money?
A. Most important: clearly define your need or problem.
Prove the extent of the problem with statistical
evidence such as test scores, at-risk numbers, etc.
Then, clearly defined the program or process you will
use to fix that problem.
If you are on a low budget and want to write a quality
grant, I recommend that you purchase Dr. Deborah Porter's,
SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL GRANTS: Fulfilling the Promise of School
Improvement. It's only $38.00 and gives step-by-step
instructions for writing grants for schools. Free shipping.
