While this newsletter is free, new programs for your
students are not. I know vacations, rest, and relaxation
are important to all educators (my wife has taught 1st
grade for over 30 years---I taught and principaled for more
than 20 years), but it is also important to find the
funding your need for new programs.
I encourage you to spend a part of your summer seeking
out and writing a few grants. You're not exactly going
to have MORE time when school starts in a month or two.
That's when it really gets hectic. Take two important
first steps today.
Visit our website at:
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
and do several free grant searches simply by registering.

Will the Grant You Write Make a Difference?
by Don Peek
If you really hope to get grant money from state, federal,
or foundation sources, you must write a grant that will
make a real difference to your students or teachers.
First, find a problem in your school that needs
correcting.
What kinds of problems need solutions? Maybe you have:
1) too many teenage pregnancies in your high school
2) reading or math levels a year or more below average
3) not enough music and art offerings for your students
It could be a hundred different problems in a district,
school, grade, or individual classroom.
Once you locate that burning need and find test scores or
other data proving that need, it is time to come up with
the best solution to correct the problem.
That is why you need grant money---to correct that
well-defined problem. You will also need to use
test scores or other well-defined measurements to prove
the progress that you make.
Finally, you will normally want to use a program or
methods that could be used in other schools that have
similar problems.
What really needs changing in your school? Think
about it. Talk to your fellow educators. When the
problem is well-defined, write a grant to help you
solve that problem. Once you solve your problem,
share your successful solution with other schools.
That is grant-writing at its very best.
Oh, one more thing. Start today!
The School Funding Center's database at
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info/
will help you match your needs to the grants that are
available. We include live links to email and websites
of
granting organizations whenever available.
We also give address, phone, and fax. In other words,
the information is there so you don't waste your time
applying for funds for which you don't qualify.

===========================================================
Tips
===========================================================
1.
Make sure you narrow the problem you wish to correct and
clearly define it. Take them one at a time.
2. Even if you write the entire grant, get input from
others. Fresh eyes find errors in grant applications.
3. Never use filler or big sounding words. Be clear,
concise, and to the point. Grant readers will
see
through it in a second if you try to fool them.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. I am about to attempt my first grant. Where
should I
start?
A. Even though the first grant I wrote was for over
$100,000 (and I got it), I would recommend starting with
a smaller grant at first to get your feet wet. Then,
find out why you got the money or why you didn't. Then
write another, and another, and another. The money is
out there. You just have to be persistent.
