The object of education is to prepare the young to educate
themselves throughout their lives.

===========================================================

I'm going to issue a challenge this month.  Actually, not
one challenge, but two.

My first challenge is for you to pick out a student and
make a difference in that one student's life this year.  I
know you make a difference in the lives of all your
students as an educator, but I'm talking about extra
involvement.  I'm talking about going that extra mile.

When I was a teacher, then principal, then assistant
superintendent, I was involved with thousands of students.
There was a handful, however, that I know without a doubt
I made a true difference in their lives.

A few, I helped through college because I knew without
financial help, they wouldn't have made it.  Some others,
I was able to help get jobs they desperately needed. With
quite a few, I was able to give them the extra time
and attention I knew they weren't getting at home,
school, or anywhere else.

What I did doesn't make me special in any way. You just
have to pay attention and see who needs a little help.  It
won't take a lot of time or money.  You just have to
be aware and care.

I challenge you to pick a student and begin today.

My next challenge is short.  Write a grant for your school
or classroom.  It doesn't have to be large or complicated.
Just find one and write it for the money, the experience,
or for a special project that just can't be funded any
other way.

As soon as you've chosen your student to help, start
looking for that grant to write.  You are in a position
to help others in so many ways.  Please don't take that
opportunity for granted.

What Type of Programs Get Funded?
by Don Peek

Need a grant for a football stadium, a swimming pool, band
uniforms, or a trip for your seniors to Disney World?  Need
a grant for starting your own private school with 10
students or to pay your salary because the school cut your
program?

Your chances of finding money for these projects, even
though they may be very worthy in your eyes and those of
your community, are extremely slim.

Want to improve your reading program because your students
are two years below level?  Want to improve math scores for
the same reason?  Want to start an after-school program for
family literacy?  Need to improve technology and technology
skills for low-income, at-risk students?

Now you're at the other end of the spectrum.  A lot of grant
money goes to those types of programs and activities.

Remember, most programs funded by grants need to show
measurable growth or change, and they need to be replicable
at least with similar populations in a similar environment.

In the middle somewhere, grant money is available for
literally thousands and thousands of different projects.
The School Funding Center lists 30 separate categories in
our database. Categories include reading, math, and science,
but also arts, facilities, technology, after-school, health
and PE, and professional development.

Remember, more than 100,000 grants are awarded to schools
around the country each year.  So while going to Disneyland
will probably not fly, thousands of projects, some of them
relatively unusual, will.

Finding the proper granting agency is essential.  Knowing as
much as you can about that grantor, what they fund and why,
is key to your success. Finally, completing whatever
type of application they require completely and exactly as
directed is the final step in successfully getting grant
money.

Whenever possible, go to a granting agency's website and see
what they have funded in the past.  That is the greatest key
in knowing what they will fund in the future.  If they have
begun to change directions in their funding, that will also
be explained on their website.

Follow these steps:  develop your program on paper,
research possible granting agencies thoroughly, write
your grant proposal.

The School Funding Center's database at
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are
available.  We include live links to email and websites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Q & A
===========================================================

Q.  What are my chances of getting grant money?

A.  Very, very good.  Persistence pays off.  Keep writing
and you'll eventually be awarded grant money. If your
application is not awarded grant money, find out
exactly why and work on those areas before you apply
    again.
