Education is a vaccine for violence. --- Edward James Olmos

The holidays are here again, and, for educators, that means a little time off from school. But are you going to use your time off wisely?

I spoke with a middle school teacher the other day who was solely responsible for writing grants for her school. It was a huge undertaking for one person, she told me, and also said it was difficult to find the time to do the research required to compile the necessary information for grant writing.

The School Funding Center website lists thousands of organizations that can help educators get the funding they need, whether for special education, a unique arts curriculum, or a state-of-the-art computer class. And best of all, the information on the site is up-to-date and accurate, and lists thousands of federal, state and foundation grants to meet the funding needs of your school. It's a one-stop shop with millions of dollars in possibilities.

What better gift to give than the gift of education, especially one that is technologically advanced or highly specialized.
Yes, the holidays are here, and to secure funding for your school would surely be a gift that would keep on giving.

Ten Reasons Why Your Proposal Won't Be Funded

by Jennifer Kellar Erwin

Some people may approach grant writing with a lackadaisical attitude. Whether the disgruntled "it's-going-to-take-way-too- much-time" attitude, or the wayward "I-don't-know-where-to-begin"
theory, these approaches may hinder your chances for funding before you even start the process.

Here's a list of what NOT to do when writing a grant. I believe if you follow it pretty closely, and steer clear of the unnecessary information that may bog down your proposal, your chances will increase to receive the funding you need for your school.

1. Don't be unorganized. If a proposal is poorly written or difficult for the funder to understand, chances are it will get tossed out before it's given a fair shot. Be clear, concise and complete. Funders don't have time for chaos!

2. Don't attach too many footnotes or other references. You want your idea to sound like an original one, even if it's one that's been used countless times before by other grantseekers. Put a creative spin on your idea to make sure it gets noticed.

3. Don't ramble. You should have a well-devised plan, and shouldn't sound as though you're making it up as you go along.
You also want to convey that your plan is thorough, not hastily thought out.

4. Don't do it by yourself. A grant that lacks evidence of coordination with other individuals working together to achieve the same goals will give the impression that your team isn't on the same page; thus, the funder may think the money won't be put to proper use.

5. Don't ask for funding from the wrong organization. If your needs don't match the grantor's requirements, consider your proposal a flop. Make sure all objectives, yours and theirs, line up perfectly.

6. Don't go off on a tangent. Most requests for proposals
(RFPs) give clear instructions. Follow them to the letter!
Keep your martyrdom under wraps, and don't waste the funder's time.

7. Don't have weak objectives. Before you ever sit down to write your grant, you should know EXACTLY what the money will fund if you're lucky enough to receive it. Be confident in your proposal, not vague or scattered.

8. Don't be greedy. If your proposed budget contains expenditures that are unnecessary or unjustified to reach the program's goal, you may come across as a money hungry individual, rather than a concerned and competent educator.

9. Don't ask for more than what's offered. If a grantor says they won't fund equipment expenses, don't include the need for a new copier into your grant. Funders are clear about what they'll fund. If you think it will work in your favor to "try anyway," rest assured it won't.

10. Don't be late. If you're thinking of waiting that one extra day to mail your grant, think again. If you miss a deadline, your hard work will fall by the wayside and open the door for someone who wanted it more than you did.

The School Funding Center's database at http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are available. We include live links to e-mail and websites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Tips
===========================================================

  1. Use spell check!  You'd be surprised!
  2. Read your finished proposal as a GRANT READER would.  It might surprise you how your proposal sounds.
  3. Develop a good budget in your grant---enough to satisfy needs, but no fluff.

Q & A
===========================================================

Q. What are my odds of being funded?

A. If you seek compatible funders, your chances of being funded will greatly improve. Advance contact with the funder may also increase your odds, whether through a phone call or personal conversation. If your previous grant application teetered the line of being funded but was edged out the first go-round, you might very well be remembered by the funder. Through a face-to-face, scheduled visit, you may be able to find out what prevented your proposal from getting funded, therefore, giving you a chance to improve your strategy the second time around!
