Grantseeking is no longer optional.
I read recently that grants represent one-third of major revenue for your school district, following behind state aid and local taxes. Because of this, deciding not to incorporate outside funding into your budget is a costly decision. And it's definitely one that will do more harm than good.
Think of what a $100,000 grant awarded by a local foundation could do to offset your operating losses in the coming school year. Or how about state grant funding that could be used to expand or update a much-needed program that's already in place?
People say it takes a village to raise a child. That's all well and good, but I think it takes money to educate them. If an individual school, or county, for that matter, has limited
financial resources, it can't formulate and carry out its plan to offer a solid, high-performance education that all children rightfully deserve. Even the federal government has proposed more cutbacks in education funding, which will be of further detriment to schools across the nation.
If you're thinking of putting off that grant search until next year, don't. If you do, you're at risk to lose funding to someone else who's aware of other pools in which to search when the proverbial well runs dry.

The Problem Is Not Your Own: It's Your School's

In order for you to secure outside funding for your school, you must paint a picture for the funder from which monies are being sought. Since many grants are highly competitive, just asking for the money in a neatly-packaged letter won't cut it. You have to sell your idea, and convince the funder that their money will be used to benefit the school as a whole, not just an idea you feel is worth funding.
By painting a clear picture for the grant maker, you first must first get them to "see" the plan you've set before them in action. The funder needs to feel as though the monies will make him or her part of a successful team, not that he or she just boarded a sinking ship!
As you compile your information - this also includes researching potential funders - make sure your idea doesn't ramble on. If it rambles in your mind, chances are it will ramble on paper, too. Funders don't have time to fill in the blanks for you.
Be optimistic about your project. Using strong verbs that exemplify positivity will not only gain the funder's attention, but give them a sense their money will be put to good use.
For example, instead of saying, "We hope this project will be of some benefit to the students," you probably should say, "We expect this project will benefit the students." Also, use an active voice rather than a passive voice. An active voice is more simple and direct.
Keep in mind that you are not in this for your own merit. You're in it for the betterment of your staff, your students and your school as a whole. As one grant writer put it, your grant should speak loudly that "We are competent and, with funding, have the ability to make a difference."
Education isn't a one-man show and neither is funding it. So when you get all your ducks in a row to apply for that grant, remember to keep your priorities in order.

Q. We found that a recently awarded grant will not cover all the expenses we thought it would. Should we contact the funder again to see if they'll give us more money?
A. Absolutely not! It's not the funder's fault their dollars aren't stretching as far as you had initially guessed they would.
In addition, be sure not to spend money on things not in your original proposal, especially since funders monitor how their money is being, or has been, spent!
From now on, take the word "guess" out of your vocabulary when it comes to grant writing. You must learn to plan to the dollar in advance what your project will cost. Use this as a learning experience, and don't make the same mistake in the future.
Mistakes like this can be avoided.
