Many things can wait. Children cannot. Today, their bones are being formed, their blood is being made, their senses are being developed. To them we cannot say "tomorrow." Their name is today. - Gabriela Mistral (Chilean teacher 1899-1957)

Here in the South, spring has sprung a leak! It's not as warm as it should be, and I'm more than ready for warm weather to get here - and stay! But when warm weather arrives, I know that the time will seem to fly until the end of the school year.
My county's school district will say goodbye to its students on June 9, a little over 2 months from now. I hope you've done your research on The School Funding Center's Web site, and compiled some information to apply for some grants before then.
Many deadlines are fast approaching for grants that need to be awarded before year's end to help with expenses for the upcoming school year. Maybe there is an exciting visual arts curriculum or an after-school program for gifted students for which you seek funding. No matter the capacity, students deserve to be challenged - and it takes money to back the programs that challenge them.
You can prepare yourself to say goodbye to your students for the summer. But The School Funding Center can help you can say hello to some grant money for your school.
Take some time and apply for a grant today.

Who Are The Key Players?
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin
So many people are mistaken in thinking that applying for
grants is all about the end result---the receipt of monies
from a particular organization, whether federal, state or
foundation. But when you sit down to write a grant, you must
realize there are many important components that must accompany
the end result.
In addition to outlining your program concisely, you must
also provide the grantor with key players, and their
responsibilities, in the program. It isn't reasonable to think
that for one program you would request funding to employ 100
qualified teachers. One instructor, for example, may have
several duties to orchestrate the program so that it runs at
its highest level of efficiency.
Let's say your school seeks funding for a special "academy,"
or a school within a school, which will cater specifically to
at-risk, low-income, or disadvantaged children. There are 75
students, of which half are Spanish-speaking students. The
program also will incorporate field trips and other outings
in which these students normally would not participate.
First things first: the ESL instructors. While they will be
required to accommodate differing levels of English language
proficiency, these teachers can also be required to teach
reading, writing and speech to the students whose primary
language is English. One instructor can serve more than one
purpose, as long as his or her hours are properly allocated.
Who will teach the other program's subjects, like math, computer,
or science? Will you have a counselor to address certain social
and emotional needs of these students? What will each instructor's
teaching load be per week? Each person's role must be well
thought out and their hours distributed accordingly. Remember that
your staff's responsibilities and hours also should be listed in
your grant application, and, at the very least, introduced in
your Letter of Inquiry.
Will part-time assistants, rather than full-time employees,
be required to fulfill the students' needs? It's not a bad idea to
look into college students, possibly looking for an internship,
to help in this area. It might even save you a little money.
Keep in mind that appropriately staffed programs usually have
better chances of receiving funding---because just like you,
grantors take into consideration the students' best
interests, as well.
The School Funding Center's database at
http://www.schoolfundingcenter.info
will help you match your needs to the grants that are
available. We include live links to e-mail and Web sites of
granting organizations whenever available.
Usually address, phone, and/or fax is included.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. What exactly is a discretionary grant?
A. A discretionary grant is a grant in which a particular
organization awards at its discretion---hence, its name.
Usually, discretionary grants are highly competitive, as
the funder must take each aspect of the received proposal
into consideration before deciding whether or not to award
funding. Does this application best address our program
requirements? Is this program worthy of funding? These are
questions that will be asked, and ultimately answered, by
the organization that is awarding a discretionary grant.
