If I ran a school, I'd give the average grades to the ones who gave me all the right answers, for being good parrots.
I'd give the top grades to those who made a lot of mistakes and told me about them, and then told me what they learned from them. - R. Buckminster Fuller

My mother used to tell me that there was no better time than the present. This also rings true in grant writing.
Now that summer is almost here, staying abreast of the most up-to-date grant opportunities should be a high priority.
In addition to the fact that there is still time to apply for summer school programs at your school, you should take advantage of new grants for fall programs that you know will need supplemental funding, as well.
And don't limit yourself! Applying for more than one grant can, of course, increase your chances for funding. Relying solely on, for example, one highly competitive grant may not be as lucrative for your school. In addition, be aware that not every grantmaker can fund every proposal it receives.
You may also want to consider partnerships with community organizations to help reduce your overall costs.
Now's a good time to start making some contacts, too. Have you discussed your ideas with the grantmaker? Through your proposal, you will show how your school can achieve the grantmaker's goals, but communicating beforehand can help clear the air and form a relationship with a potential funder.
There a lot to do, and there's no better time than the present. Do your homework, compile your information and start writing that grant today.

Be Willing to "Talk The Talk"
by Jennifer Kellar Erwin
The Narrative: What is it, exactly? It's part of a grant, but just how important is it?
The narrative portion of your grant proposal should include the who, what, when, where, why and how of the project for which you're asking to be funded. And you should prepare yourself to answer all of those questions when writing your grant.
Most narratives should satisfy the following questions:
1. What do we want?
2. What concern will be addressed?
3. Why is your concern important?
4. Who will benefit and how?
5. What objectives can be accomplished? How?
6. How will results be measured? Who will measure them?
7. How does this funding request relate to the funder's objectives and priorities?
8. Who are we, and how do we qualify to meet this need?
In addition, the narrative should include a "hook," which should align the project with the purpose. Is your proposal compelling? A strong hook is a critical aspect of a proposal and might determine how its reviewers perceive the idea.
Make sure your narrative is strong. Avoid "chatter" or irrelevant verbiage. The funder wants to get to know your program. It's your job to lay out all the details clearly and concisely.
Stick to the facts - and know that "talking the talk" is only half the battle.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. Should we let a potential funder know about in-kind gifts we've received?
A. Absolutely. This will help them better assess budgets. Most funders request that a budget be submitted with your proposal.
Matching funds should also be included, if applicable, since funders recognize when someone else is "in on the deal." This may be the deciding factor they need to fund your project.
