Education is one of the few things a person is willing to pay for and not get.  -William Lowe Bryan

Has our world gone completely crazy?  It's not enough to have world leaders on our televisions every day threatening to do us harm.  In this country, where we have more freedom than any place on the planet, we still have crazy people coming into our schools and shooting our students, teachers, and administrators.  Will this ever end?

It's such a shame to have fences around our schools, doors locked tight, and metal detectors at every entrance.  It's even more of a shame, though, to see all the death and destruction that a lone gunman can wreak in such a short time.  There is no easy answer to this problem.

Last week, my wife's first grade class repeated their drill.
Shut and lock the door from the inside.  Huddle in the closet.  Be very, very quiet.  I think it's admirable that they have a plan and that they practice it.

What do you do to protect your students and yourself?  Is your plan to deal with a violent intruder in place at the classroom level, the campus level, and the district level?
Do you have drills so that everyone knows what to do including new students?

Make sure you do.  I know 101 things cut into teaching time, but before students can learn, they must first feel safe.  Make sure your students feel safe and are safe every day they are entrusted to you.

Getting the Data You Need

When you apply for a grant, you will typically do a needs assessment in order to identify a specific problem area you wish to address.  It is important that you supply sufficient data in the grant application to support the contention that you have a problem, but that it can be fixed or alleviated.

The following list of student data may help you find plenty of support to use in your grant application:

1) Results of standardized testing (disaggregated)
2) Attendance rates
3) Discipline logs
4) Graduation rates
5) Dropout rates
6) College entrance exam (ACT,SAT) participation & results
7) Passing rates on state tests (disaggregated)
8) Student demographics (grade, age, race, economic status, etc.)
9) Special program numbers and percentages (Sp.Ed., GT, etc.)
10) Percentage of students in advanced, honors, college courses

With this data you can often prove that you need grant money.
When the grant reader compares data, it is easy to see which schools need the grant money most.  The lack of data in an application will virtually eliminate it from being considered when compared with other applications that use data to support their claims.

Start with your needs assessment.  Look at as much data as necessary to find your problem areas.  But don't stop there.
Be sure to include as much of this data as is necessary to show the granting agency that you do truly have a need for
the grant money for which you are applying.

Tips
===========================================================

1. You don't have to be a great writer to apply for grants,
   but have a good writer check over your application.
2. Have your computer check for spelling and typos.
3. Make sure you follow directions very carefully in a
   grant application, down to size of font and proper
   margins.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. Can I just use one application and apply to several places for grant money?

A: Although you may be able to use large sections of one grant application when applying for others, it is doubtful you could just copy it directly.  Why?  Because each granting agency gives money for different reasons.  The best way to get grant money is to match your needs and the granting agency's purpose for giving money as closely as possible.  The chance of using one standard application makes this almost impossible.
