It amazes me sometimes just how fast we move through the school year.  Here we are at the end of February, and there is only a little over three months left in our current year.

I think with almost two-thirds of the year gone, it's a good time to look both backward and forward.  Regardless of your position in your school, you need to review the last several months in your mind to determine exactly what has been accomplished with your students.  What things can they do now that they couldn't do in September?

What is it absolutely necessary that they be able to do before you reach June and the end of the semester?  What groups are lagging?  What individuals just aren't up to speed?  What will you do differently in the next three months to give every child an equal chance at success?

We all need to be able to make frequent assessments and alter our activities to meet the needs of our students.
And that goes for principals, superintendents, curriculum directors, and every other administrator as well as teachers.  We all make a difference---or at least we should.

When you've finished that little assessment, try this one.
What new program or program elements do you need for summer school or the fall semester to better meet the needs of your students?  How will you fund those programs?

I encourage you to begin thinking today about using grant money to make the changes you need.  You don't have to spend a month looking for the right grant or grants.  We have over 110,000 available in The School Funding Center Grant Database.  Let us help you find the grant money you need to support the changes you need to make this summer or in the fall semester.

Give your students every opportunity to succeed, and let us help you.

After the Needs Assessment

In the January newsletter we talked about needs assessments.
Hopefully, you've taken that to heart and done some mid- year assessments over the past few weeks.

Once you've determined your strengths and weaknesses (for your classroom, campus, or district), it's time to determine what changes need to be made in order to change your weaknesses to strengths, or at least remove them as weaknesses.

For example, let's say that you've determined that your students in the middle school, grades 6th, 7th, and 8th, read on the average 1 1/2 years below grade level.  You also find that both minority and at-risk students read more than
2 grade levels below normal.

You need to determine what programs or activities will alleviate this problem.  You may not even have a reading program for every middle school student.  Maybe you have one for at-risk students, but it's not working well for them.

That's exactly what I found when I became a principal a few years ago.  We determined that all of our students needed a reading class.  We decided that they needed to practice reading if they were going to get better at the skill of reading.  We determined that they would practice an hour per day at school.

Remember, once you determine the need and the proposed solution, you have to commit both the time and the money to make the changes that have the best chance of fixing the problem.

Naturally, we didn't have money to get more reading teachers, buy more library books, and get the reading software that we wanted to monitor the daily reading of our students and the overall progress they were making.

We had to have grant money.  We determined what we needed to fix the problem, what grants were available, and then went after what we needed.  Unfortunately, we didn't have The School Funding Center Grant Database which would have cut our work in half.

We experienced a very happy ending.  After two years, our reading scores were some of the best in the state of Texas.
When our students became better readers, their scores went up in every other discipline, too.

Word got out on how much we improved, and the governor of our state made a visit to our school.

Remember, first the needs assessment, then the solution, then find the grants to pay for the things you need to be successful.

We did it.  So can you.
