The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards.

In light of the Virginia Tech tragedy, I think we should take a moment to explore what each of us might do to help prevent this type of destruction at our own school.

Looking back over my own many years of experience as teacher, counselor, principal, and assistant superintendent, I know there are troubled students in every class.  I have seen my own troubled students go on to steal, rape, and kill others.  I have seen them take their own lives, too.

That's not to say that I haven't had many, many more students who became doctors, lawyers, preachers, and just all-around good citizens. But while these students need guidance, they don't need the intervention that the others need.

Of course I know that teachers and administrators are already overburdened with the tasks they are expected to accomplish each year.  All I am saying is that we all need to take a little extra time to notice who does not fit in well at school.  Who gets teased, or maybe worse, gets left completely and totally alone?  Who exhibits bizarre behavior just to get noticed regardless of the consequences?  Who writes those strange papers to shock members of the class and even the teacher?

Lots of students simply never develop coping skills.  Some have no support at all from parents.

You can't act as counselor if you're not a trained counselor, but you can refer students who exhibit unusual behavior.
You can discuss them in team meetings.

There many students who will never go on a shooting rampage like the one at Virginia Tech but still need help to prevent them from brutalizing others around them in one way or another.

In the time we have left in this school year, I encourage you to identify and intervene.  It may literally save your own life or others you love.

Making the Call

One of the many pieces of information we give for each grant we feature in The School Funding Center Grant Database is the contact person and phone number for that particular grant.  We wouldn't list that information if it were not important.

It takes considerable time and effort to apply for a grant.
If you are going to expend that time and effort, why not give yourself every chance possible of actually winning that grant money?

Typically, the contact person for a grant will be more knowledgeable about that grant than anyone else.  They might even give you tips to better your chances for receiving the grant.  At the very least, they can give you more information than anyone else, and the more information you have about the inner workings of a grant, the better your chances of getting that grant money.

A phone call is especially helpful when you are applying for foundation grants.  Many foundations are run by a small board, and the contact person usually sits on this board and helps decide which grant applications to fund.

The contact person can tell you if your project really fits the scope of the foundation.  Matching your need with the intent of the foundation is absolutely critical, and a phone call can often save you tremendous time and effort.  In some cases, you'll abandon your application to the particular foundation because you'll find that the fit is not there.  More often, you'll be able to make your application much, much clearer and more persuasive by having one or more conversations with the contact person.

Please be aware that some grants specifically ask you NOT to call.  Often there is an email address instead of a phone number for the contact person.  Even though a phone call is typically more productive, use whatever means of communication is available to get all the information you can before you ever start to apply for a grant.

Whether you plan to apply for one grant or ten, call each contact person to get as much information as you can.  It's one call that can often pay a ton in dividends.
