Can the Falling Economy Affect Your School?

With house values falling, it is likely that less taxes will be collected this year than last.  People having trouble making house payments also have trouble making credit card payments and tax payments.

The less tax money that schools have to maintain their budgets, the more they need grant money to keep from cutting programs and people.  The more competition there is for grant money, the harder it is for schools to get the grant money they need.

If things get bad enough for businesses, they usually put less money into their foundations to give to schools.

You can see where this cycle is going.

I strongly recommend that you begin applying for as many grants as you can now.  A year from now our economy may be back as strong as it ever was, but there's no guarantee of that.  It is better to be cautious and line up as much grant money for next school year as you can now than to wait and face more competition later in the year.

Hopefully, things will look much brighter economically in a few months than it does now.  Just in case it doesn't, do your planning now.  You'll be glad you did.

Time for More Assessment

Those of you who read this newsletter regularly know I've got a real bug for assessment.  I don't play games without keeping score.  I don't think you can run a business effectively without keeping books.  And I don't think you can run a school effectively without constant and accurate assessment.

Something else you can't do without proper assessment is write grants properly.  Too many people have the idea that you write grants just to get money.  If you take that approach, you will never be truly successful in your grant writing.

You should be writing grants to improve programs that you already have or to institute new programs that will solve or alleviate a problem that you have.  The only way to do either properly is to begin with an assessment of the program or the problem.

Good assessments can take many forms.  You can use test scores, surveys, questionnaires, teacher and administrator observation, focus groups, etc.  However, I personally believe the more quantitative the data, the better it supports your grant application.

If you can show that your at-risk 5th graders read two grades lower than they should but improve substantially when they are placed in small groups, you can write a grant to support that arrangement.

If you have statistics to show that high school dropouts were decreased by 40% by intensive individual counseling in a neighboring town with a similar population, then you have assessment to strengthen your grant application.

The first semester is now over for most of you.  It's a perfect time to gather assessment data from that first semester and use it to write all the grants you need.

Remember, assess your programs and/or your needs first, gather all the data you can, and start filling out those grant applications.  The more you write and the stronger your assessment data, the better your chances of getting the grant money you need.

Q & A
===========================================================
Q. I'm new at this.  Does writing grants get easier as you go?

A: Absolutely.  Not only does getting experience make it
easier, but you can often use large pieces of what you
have written in other grant applications.  This makes
it much easier to write grants 2,3, 4, and 5.  Getting
started is always the hardest part.
